My Story

 At just eight years old, Akshaya Sri already carries responsibilities far beyond her age. Living with her family in a cramped one-room home, her day begins as early as 5:30 a.m. She helps her elder sister with cooking, cleaning, and household chores before getting ready for school, on the days she is allowed to attend.

For Akshaya’s family, educating a girl is not considered a priority. Her parents see daughters as a financial burden because of the cost of raising them and the dowry they believe they will have to provide in the future. Akshaya often hears that spending money on her is like “throwing money away,” words that have deeply affected how she sees herself.

She has already watched her elder sister struggle to remain in school, especially during harvest seasons when she is expected to work as a daily-wage labourer. It was only through the support of her teacher that her sister was able to continue her education.

Now, Akshaya faces the same risk. Her parents have openly discussed stopping her education and sending her to work in nearby fields or homes as a domestic worker so that she can contribute to the family income. Without continued support and protection, Akshaya is at serious risk of child labour, school dropout and early marriage. More importantly, she needs the opportunity to understand that her life, education and future have value.
