My Story

All of Akshaya’s life she has been told that she is worthless and that her life has no meaning. After giving birth to a second baby girl, Akshaya’s parents tried in vain to produce a male heir. Her father beat his daughters and wife mercilessly and then suddenly quit providing for his family. The family struggled to stay afloat and one day Akshaya’s father came home to take the girls to the railway track to kill both them and himself. Only the intervention of nearby neighbors stopped her father from taking their lives. Her mother filed for divorce, stopped the girls’ education, and forced them into menial jobs in order to put food on the table. Eventually, concerned neighbors approached our team and informed them of Akshaya’s situation. We are working through counseling and explaining to the mother that the cause of her problems is not because her children are girls. Your sponsorship will keep Akshaya out of illegal child jobs and allow her to be admitted back into school. She will not be told that she is the cause of a problem, but instead that she is strong and precious. Akshaya will be told the truth: that she is valuable, and her life has immeasurable worth.
