My Story

A Baby Saved Through Timely Intervention – SIS024 Bharathi

In a small village, a young family lived with the father’s parents. The grandmother, a country medicine practitioner, had raised four daughters and one son. After her husband’s death, she was forced to sell their land piece by piece to arrange marriages for her daughters. This experience left her deeply prejudiced and bitter, believing that having girls brought only burden and loss.

When her son’s wife became pregnant for the second time, the grandmother gave her country medicine to end the pregnancy after the birth of their first daughter. Later, during the third pregnancy, the family consulted a fortune teller and were convinced that a boy would be born. But when a second baby girl arrived in the government hospital, the grandmother’s disappointment turned dangerous. After the newborn was brought home, she attempted to poison the infant with cactus milk.

Thankfully, IGP social workers and several mothers in the program learned of the threat. They acted quickly, alerting others. Together, the women’s group leaders and the IGP team intervened, working with the baby’s mother to ensure the child’s safety. The newborn and her mother were immediately provided with postnatal care and medical attention.

Because of the swift action of the IGP social workers and the community, this little girl’s life was saved and her mother received the care and protection she desperately needed.
