My Story

Sarvaeswari grew up in a slum area, with her parents making about $1 a day as rag pickers. As is the custom in her culture, her parents were hoping and waiting for a baby boy to be born to carry on the family name. As the third girl in the family, Sarvaeswari is viewed and treated as a burden. Because of this, as a young girl, Sarvaeswari was severely neglected in her home, simply because she’s a girl. Her father believes that girls bring bad luck to the family, and therefore Sarvaeswari was emotionally and physically abused by him. She has never attended school, but instead stays home and does household chores, including fetching and bringing water home. Sarvaeswari’s makeshift home is unsafe for anyone, let alone a little girl to live in, and she is denied basic needs such as proper food, hygiene and care. Constantly being told lies about her worth and value has shaped Sarvaeswari’s thinking, which greatly affects her general well-being.

Thankfully, one of our social workers was contacted about her situation and came into the situation. Sarvaeswari’s parents explained that they could barely financially provide for immediate physical needs, much less schooling. After our social worker explained the gravity of the situation, they agreed to allow their daughter to come and live in safe housing and attend school.

Now, we work towards making sure that Sarvaeswari’s physical and emotional needs are met on a daily basis. This involves seeing that she begins to understand and accept her true value as an asset, and not a burden, to society. Our social worker strives to make sure that Sarvaeswari’s needs are met, and with your help she will be able to continue with us and grow into a bright future, overcoming her past.
