Like many Indian families, Lakshmi’s father only wanted sons, but instead had two daughters. After Lakshmi’s birth, her father deserted his family. They moved into their grandfather’s home, and after he passed away, Lakshmi’s mother sent Lakshmi and her older sister, Durga, to the nearby temple to beg. She felt that this was her only option to provide as a single mother.
A government social worker found the two girls begging, and they were placed in different short-term homes to see if any family members would come looking for their children. After weeks, Lakshmi and her sister were finally sent to our partner’s home, where they both are now. Their mother visited them only once to tell them that she had recently remarried and would never visit them again.
Before her rescue, Lakshmi was at risk of many dangers—including being sold into sex trafficking, which takes the lives of many girls in India. But because of her rescue, Lakshmi is now living in a stable home surrounded by loving and attentive adults. Your sponsorship helps cover Lakshmi’s tuition fees, provide her with a school uniform, and continue to give her consistent and nutritious meals. Your support ensures that Lakshmi not only continues to grow in a healthy and safe environment, but also assures her that she is capable, valued, and loved.
