My Story

Chandrika is the youngest of three sisters. Her father and his parents only wanted sons—falsely believing that daughters are just burdens on the family resources. After her mother had given birth to three daughters, her father and grandparents began to severely neglect all of the girls. Chandrika’s father forced his wife to abandon their oldest daughter to be raised by her maternal grandmother. Chandrika’s father often refused to feed his two remaining daughters properly, and when he died in an accident, Chandrika’s grandparents’ neglect only increased. They insisted Chandrika and her older sister, Pavithra, be sent to do hard manual labor to earn income.

Knowing she would no longer be able to go to school, Chandrika tearfully expressed her pain to her teacher who reached out to our social workers. After learning of the situation, our partners were able to intervene on behalf of Chandrika and Pavithra. Your sponsorship allows Chandrika to go to school and live in a safe home where she is protected from neglect, abuse, and forced child labor. She is safe, has access to nutritious food and education, and most importantly, she is being told truth: she is loved, she is valuable, she is worthy.
