My Story

Saranya’s father only wanted sons in his family. He let his wife know that he would only be accepting of their children if she bore him a son. To his disappointment, when his wife gave birth to their firstborn child, it was a baby girl. When his wife became pregnant again, he eagerly expected to have a son. Again, to his disappointment, his wife gave birth to Saranya. Saranya’s father rejected her and her sister. He provided his wife with very little money to provide for them and insisted that she not send them to school but, rather, she was to take both of the little girls to labor work with her each day. Because of this, the children would suffer in the hot sun all day instead of going to school.

The family’s landlord became concerned for the little girls and reached out to our social workers for help. Once our social workers learned about Saranya and her sister, they were able to intervene on their behalf. Your sponsorship ensures Saranya is enrolled in school rather than becoming a child laborer. It also provides her with ongoing support and counseling from our social workers who are teaching her the value of being a girl!
