My Story

Venkata’s mother only desired a son—she believed having a son would provide their family with an heir to earn more money for the household. After Venkata was born, her mother was greatly dissatisfied and began to severely neglect her daughter. Venkata was often left alone without proper attention, medical care, and food. A year after Venkata was born, her mother had a second child: a son. Her neglect of Venkata only grew worse with the birth of her son, whom she greatly favored. 

Our social workers learned about Venkata through concerned neighbors and were able to confront her mother for her negligence and, ultimately, intervene on Venkata’s behalf.
