Rubitha was born into a home where a girl’s life held little value. Her parents, Manasa and Prasad, shared a strong gender bias both believing that only a boy heir could bring pride to the family. Prasad, raised with the belief that boys are superior, openly declared that he wanted only sons.
When Manasa became pregnant, both hoped for a boy. But the moment she gave birth to a baby girl, Rubitha, disappointment filled the house. Prasad began to hate his wife and daughter, and Manasa, influenced by her husband’s beliefs, started blaming the child for her suffering.
Rubitha grew up with no affection, no new clothes, no toys, no birthday celebrations. School became the only place where she felt a small sense of normalcy.
A few years later, Manasa gave birth to a baby boy. The family rejoiced, celebrating him as a blessing and symbol of honour. From that moment on, Rubitha was expected to take care of her brother’s needs, while the parents focused all their hopes and resources on the boy.
When their income fell short, they planned to enrol the boy in an English-medium school. To afford this, they stopped Rubitha’s education and sent her for labour work, forcing her to sacrifice her childhood so her brother could study.
Without intervention, Rubitha would have continued facing discrimination, child labour, and the loss of her education, simply because she was born a girl.
