Smaya, a 13-month-old girl, lives in a difficult and unsafe environment. Her father, a daily wage laborer, and her mother, a housewife, were disappointed that she was not a boy. After complications during her birth, her father grew resentful, blaming Smaya for the family’s struggles. He mistreats and scolds her, creating an unhealthy atmosphere that threatens her well-being.
IIGP social workers learned of Smaya's situation through a survey and intervened. They explained to her father the long-term harm his behavior could cause and warned of legal consequences. However, he was defiant and dismissed their advice. The social workers then sought help from the area ASHA worker (ASHA workers are trained to act as a link between the community and the public health system, non-medical health worker), who knew the family.
The ASHA worker (non-medical health worker) confronted the father, countering his superstitions and warning of official complaints. Fearing action, he reluctantly agreed to improve his behavior. The ASHA worker assured frequent visits to monitor Smaya’s safety, while counseling is planned to help the father overcome his biases and provide a better future for his daughter.
