Lakshmi Narayana and Surekha’s marriage was marked by Narayana’s intense desire for a male heir. When Surekha gave birth to their first daughter, he was devastated and rejected both his wife and child, refusing even basic care for the girl. Surekha’s mother took in the little girl, shielding her from his neglect.
When Surekha had a second daughter, Sri Vidya, Narayana’s disappointment turned to disdain. He barred the baby from entering their home, stopped supporting his family, and pressured Surekha to try again for a son despite her poor health. Finally, when a son was born, Narayana’s behavior shifted entirely—he poured all his energy into providing for the boy, often ignoring the family’s other needs. Desperate for money, he even demanded his eldest daughter be sent as bonded labor, though the grandmother intervened, refusing his demand.
As Narayana’s neglect continued, Surekha struggled to feed Sri Vidya. Realizing she could no longer allow her daughter to endure this treatment, she found the courage to seek help, determined to rescue Sri Vidya from a life of rejection.
