Rescued from deadly neglect
Ruhitha was six months old, and her father worked as a daily-waged laborer while her mother stayed at home. Her family believed that a firstborn boy would bring good luck. Disappointed when Ruhitha was born, her father scolded and beat her mother and neglected the baby.
Her mother was left to care for Ruhitha alone. Her father, angry that she stayed home instead of earning money, constantly called Ruhitha unwanted and wished she would die.
A concerned neighbor asked a social worker to check on the family. After several visits, Ruhitha's father admitted he only wanted a boy. The social worker involved a local volunteer and an ASHA worker who knew the father. With their help, he reluctantly agreed to take better care of Ruhitha and her mother.
Social workers started counseling the father and asked the volunteer to monitor him. They believed that placing Ruhitha in IGP's care would provide a better environment and future for her.
