Rescued from feticide
Deepa faced severe abuse from her husband, Dinesh, when she became pregnant multiple times, as he only wanted a son and feared another daughter. His hostility caused two miscarriages and took a toll on her health. During her fourth pregnancy, Dinesh continued to intimidate her and even locked her out of the house one night, intent on abandoning the baby if it were a girl.
A Child Health worker discovered the unregistered pregnancy and alerted the local health authorities, who registered the pregnancy and offered support. Despite Dinesh’s opposition, Deepa received assistance for a critical scan through village Self-Help Groups (SHGs). When the baby—a girl—was delivered via surgery, doctors performed a tubectomy to protect Deepa’s health. Dinesh reacted with anger, refusing to see the child.
Health workers counseled Deepa to protect her daughter, while village authorities warned Dinesh about the legal consequences of harming the baby. With community support, Deepa was encouraged to care for her newborn baby girl Dhanvika and stand strong.
