My Story

Lasya’s parents only desired sons since they both valued boys more than girls. After Lasya was born, both of her parents were extremely disappointed by her birth. They both began to severely neglect Lasya for being a girl. Lasya’s mother eventually became pregnant again and gave birth to a son. Her parents were overjoyed to finally have a son, but their neglect of Lasya only worsened when her brother was born.

Lasya’s parents enrolled her in a government-regulated school where she would receive free lunch because they did not want to waste resources on feeding her. They wanted all of their resources to go to their son. After being in school for a short time, Lasya’s parents chose to take her out of school and send her to do labor work so she could earn money for her family—even though she was just a little girl. A concerned teacher reached out to our social workers and let them know about Lasya’s situation. Our social workers were able to confront Lasya’s parents for their negligence and intervene on her behalf.

Your sponsorship ensures Lasya is enrolled in school and receiving a good education rather than becoming a child laborer. It also provides Lasya with ongoing support and counseling from our social workers who are teaching her the value of being a girl!
