My Story

Jasmin’s mother only wanted sons in her family. When she gave birth to Jasmin, her first child, she was deeply disappointed that she had given birth to a daughter. Due to her strong son preference, Jasmin’s mother began to neglect her for being a girl. She had no interest in her daughter and Jasmin often lacked basic care and proper food. Because of this, neighbors and close relatives used to step in and take care of her. Jasmin’s father, who worked long hours for multiple days at a time was not aware of the degree of neglect she was facing from her mother.

Jasmin’s mother eventually became pregnant again and gave birth to a son. She was overjoyed to have a son, but her neglect of Jasmin only grew worse. Jasmin was eventually enrolled in a government school where she felt more at home than in her house. Her teachers became a strong support system for her. Then Jasmin’s mother decided to take her out of school so Jasmin could work, earn money for her brother’s education, and take care of her brother.

Our social workers learned about Jasmin’s situation and were able to intervene on her behalf. Your sponsorship ensures Jasmin is enrolled in school and receiving a good education. It also allows her to receive ongoing counseling and support from our social workers who are teaching her the value and worth of being a girl.
