Rescued from infanticide
Tamil
Poornima, a third-born girl, faced severe neglect and risk of infanticide due to family bias for a male child. Her anemic mother, unable to breastfeed, fed her cow's milk while recovering from childbirth in a government hospital, abandoned by her husband and mother-in-law. The father, a daily wage laborer, struggled to provide for the family, which lives in poverty with no land or stable income.
The baby’s great-grandmother informed the IGP social workers about the family’s neglect. The project staff intervened, counseling the mother, father, and mother-in-law, warning them against harming the baby. They ensured medical care for the mother and baby, including iron supplements and postnatal care. They involved the community and local health authorities to monitor the baby's safety.
The mother-in-law's continued verbal abuse over the absence of a male heir worsened tensions. However, the IGP social workers’ consistent support and counseling motivated the family to care for Poornima, who has since begun to gain weight.
