A newborn girl faced neglect and risk of harm due to her grandmother’s hostility and the father's indifference. The weak mother, unable to breastfeed adequately, sought refuge at her own mother's house. The mother-in-law verbally abused her, accusing her of being poor and immoral, and planned to give away or neglect the baby.
The family even considered selling the baby to a wealthy neighbor or letting her die through neglect. IGP social workers intervened after being alerted by community members. They reported the baby’s risk to the Public Health Care nurse, who found the baby underweight. The IGP social workers counseled the father and family, secured a written commitment from the father to care for the baby, and raised awareness about government benefits for girl children.
Despite ongoing abuse from the in-laws, the husband has started accepting and caring for the baby. The IGP social workers timely action prevented harm to the baby and continues to monitor the family to ensure her safety and well-being.
